Subject: USGS CDs in multi-disk players

Michael McDonnel reports that he cannot get his computer to read the
GNIS Digital Gazetter on a pioneer 18 disk player. I encountered a similar
problem with both the GNIS CD and also the APSRS (Aerial Photography Summary
Record System) CD. Both CDs are produced by the U.S.G.S. and use the same
proprietary Dataware software.

I called NCIC and was refered to Bob Wybraniec at U.S.G.S. (703)
648-5939. He seems to be the resident expert on this software, and he made
several suggestions. With my system I only had to make one simple change. Try
installing the software on your hard disk and then look for a file called
_DW_.CFG. There is a line in this file that reads <Driver = "FS_ISGEN=MSD000">
This line apparently tells the software to look for the CD on the "D>" drive.
Use a text editor, such as the one that comes with DOS, to change the line to
read: < Driver = "X:\">. Here X is the CD Rome drive on which you will be
using the CD. Be sure to include the quotation marks, which are part of the
statement, but do not type in the angle brackets, which I used to set off the
lines in the configuration file.

If this doesn't work, call Bob Wybraniec.
