Perhaps this horse is already dead, but two excellent mail-order
sources for gizmos useful to map collections are:

Forestry Suppliers, Inc., in Jackson, Miss.

Ben Meadows Company, in Atlanta, GA

Both have fat catalogs that include some retractable metal tape
measures with metric or metric & English measurements from the
standard companies, like Lufkin.

I've found that many general hardware stores in the US catering to
construction workers and do-it-yourselfers have only measures with
English units, even today.  Back in the early 80's, the only place I
could find a metal tape measure with both metric and English units
was in an engineering/drafting store--a K&E (Keuffel & Esser) model.
I also wanted a wooden folding engineer's rule with a metric scale,
and at the time had to have a relative bring one back from Mexico!
