Alice (and others who may have an interest):

J. Brian Harley discussed these distinctions - and more - in his
introductory chapter to 'The history of cartography', Vol. 1 (Chicago ;
London : University of Chicago Press, 1987). Might it be helpful to
skim through that chapter again and work, and/or up-date, therefrom?
Then - more updated - there's a similar category distinction, and
specific web-pages, made on the History of Cartography gateway site
[http://www.maphistory.info/], maintained by an ex-map dealer, ex-map
librarian, and occasional map collector . . .; and the excellent
'Oddens' Bookmarks' gateway site [http://oddens.geog.uu.nl/index.html].

Hmm, only two categories?

Regional map societies tend to focus on map collecting and antiquarian
maps, local interest as in WMS, NYMS

Map organizations, I assume are perhaps NACIS or NEMO? made up of
mapmakers, librarians, map aficionados of all stripes

Map library assns are made up primarily of professionals in the field of
map librarianship, curators and archivists of cartographic
collections/ALA, SLA, ACMLA

map library assocation of assns: IFLA G& M is another level with members
representing ALA, SLA, LIBER, BCS Map curators group, ACMLA, etc.

map listservs and mapblogs form another sort of mappy membership
organization, composed of those who chose to sign on

just a thought...on our mappy complexity
