     The orders for the hardware and software for the University of
Georgia Map Collection GIS Lab have gone into the never-never land
of state contracts. After a half day session where all the "lottery
winners" in the library made presentations to the Libraries' Director
and systems/hardware techies, the basics of what would be
purchased were decided. The purchase requests are now winding
their way through the University and State systems. The following
was what was suppose to be ordered. What we will receive is now in
the hands of the state (and you all know what that means, both
literarily and figuratively).

1.  Server:  486-50;  32 MB RAM;   6 GB HD.  $14,000.

2. CD-ROM stack to serve LAN. 6 Toshiba double speed drives.
         $ 2,700 .

3.  4 Workstations:  486DX2-66;  16 MB RAM;  424 MB HD;
        doublespeed CD-ROM Drive;  5.25 & 3.5  diskdrives;
        6 expansion slots, 2 VESA LB; Video Card (1 MB).
        $ 2,800 each.

4.  Color Printer:  HP DeskJet 1200C/PC ; 2MB added memory;
         (color/postscript).   $ 1,800.

5. System Software: Novell V3.12 (20 user); SCSI Express (20 user).
         $ 2,200.

6.  Other Hardware:  a.  5 NIC cards:  Interface 16.  $750.
        b.  HA (hardware access for CD-ROMs).  $400.
        c. Intel Netport (for printer). $400.
        d.  Modem:  14.4.  $200.

7. Scanner: HP ScanJet IIc. Collection owns.

8. Printer: HP LaserJet IIIp. Collection owns.

System Cost:  $ 33,600

Software:

1. ArcView (II). 4 copies (UGA site license). $ 80.

2. PC ArcInfo. (UGA site license). $ 1,000.

3.  Sammanish.  (1 copy - 7 modules and 2 state data extractor
         modules).   $ 2,000.

4.  Corel Draw 4.0 (10 user license).  $ 800.

5.  Generic CADD (1 copy).  $ 500.

Software Cost:  $  4,380.

Total Cost:  $  38, 030.

     The budget for the Lab was $38,000. We would have gotten Atlas
GIS for Windows and IDRISI software if the money had not run out.
We will buy other software packages as we need them.

     The workstations ordered are the upper level PC multimedia
workstations that were on the state contract. The basic workstation
was upgraded from 8 to 16 MB RAM at a extra cost of $300. Most
everyone I talked to in the last few months have recommended this
level of RAM. The workstation was also upgraded to a 17" monitor at
a cost of another $300. If I had the money I would have gone to a
larger monitor and to at least one flat screen monitor. The system
needed a good video card and either an EISA or a VESA local bus. A
double-speed CD-ROM is needed to speed up the transfer of data. A
good sized hard disk is needed to hold applications software and
data that will be placed on one machine and not on the LAN. A
486DX2-66 was on the state contract. I felt the Lab needed the DX
chip because of the large graphic and data files. I would have taken a
50 instead of a 66 if there was a big price difference.

     The 486-50 server is the standard server that the library is buying
for its other LANs. The 6 GB of hard disk is should be adequate for
the near future. We went with Toshiba CD-ROM drives because they
work well with SCSI Espress. I will use the 6 drive stack to hold
CD-ROM based databases mounted on the LAN. The 6 GB hard disk
will hold other LAN databases and workspace. The CD-ROMs on each
workstation will be used to load CD-ROM databases that individual
users will pull from the collection's holdings of federal government
and private CD-ROMs. The Novell V3.12 software is the LAN software
that the UGA computer center requires for LAN access to the
University's broadband (that is other campus users and the Internet).
 Scsi Express is the software currently being used by the Libraries'
system support people. The Libraries system support people will
install the Map Collection GIS LAN, will regularly back-up the system,
and will maintain the system. The Science Library's
hardware/software person and myself will help maintain the system
and will be responsible for most of the software on the GIS LAN. I will
 have to receive training in LANs that the University gives to LAN
managers.

     The modem will be used so I can call in from home to manage the
system. The color printer appears to be a standard color printer.

     I will edit and post in another message all the recommendations I
got from my first posting. If you all want more detail let me know.
