Our storage system is like the one you saw at UBC--robotic retrieval.
There are two companies that produce these systems at present. So any
info on the tubes that we can use for such storage will be appreciated.

Hi Ken!

We recently purchased some "expandable" map tubes (2 I think) for safely
moving longer/wider maps between the Cataloging and Metadata Dept. and
map collections here at Penn State. I'll see what information I can get
for you on where we bought them and cost and such.

What kind of Automated Storage Retrieval System are you talking about?
Is this similar to the movable shelves on rails that you can open and
close? Compact shelves! Something else? I was very fortunate to get a
personal tour and witness a super-fantastic automated retrieval system
at the Univ. of British Columbia for their Archives in January of 2007.
It is I believe 5 stories tall, and /truly/ is automated! One stands at
a computer terminal and keys in the appropriate box number/location
information and a mechanical system goes and retrieves one or more boxes
for you! I also know that the Univ. of Florida was one of the first, if
not the first, academic map collection to have compact shelf system that
used map cases instead of some form of standing book shelf.
