Position Summary:
Under the supervision and general direction from the Chair of the
Department of Geography and secondary direction for the integration of
GGR computing needs and UTM resources from the Chief Information
Officer, the Geographic IT Specialist provides leadership and guidance
in the development of the overall information technology strategy and in
the design, implementation, and maintenance of the IT-based systems for
geographic research and instruction for the Department. The incumbent
fosters innovation and excellence in research and teaching through the
application of information technology in alignment with the goals of the
University and the Department of Geography. The incumbent oversees the
systems support for a broad range of departmental computing issues for
faculty and staff including hardware/software support, and network
facilities related to research, teaching and administration. In addition
to a range of systems support, the incumbent provides consultation and
makes recommendations to faculty members in implementing new technology
resources into their courses and research programs. The incumbent will
assist in Undergraduate lab design/implementation using geographic
information systems (GIS) and other technologies and will provide
training to TA's. The incumbent will develop an effective liaison with
the Academic Skills Centre and the Instructional Services area of the
UTM Library to keep abreast of new and innovative ways to implement
technology into the classroom. S/he will liaise with Computing Services
Department as needed to facilitate the overall well-being of
departmental computing facilities, particularly the network. S/he may
also be asked on occasion to present to the larger UTM community on new
initiatives in Geographic Computing.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:

University degree in a geographic discipline or acceptable equivalent
combination of education and experience.

Experience:

Minimum three years' experience managing a heterogeneous networked
computing facility including hardware and software resources. Minimum
two years' experience with Geographic Information Systems. Ability to
operate and maintain Ethernet and wireless networks. Experience
maintaining and managing computing systems using the Solaris, Linux,
Windows and OS-X operating systems, especially Solaris and Linux based
servers using Apache, MySql, and related software packages. Experience
with open source and proprietary software for office applications
(wordprocessing, spreadsheet, etc,), geospatial (GIS/RS, GPS, etc),
statistical, and database applications. Web design and programming with
ability to create content management systems and other dynamic web
interfaces. Programming experience [e.g.Java, VB, PHP, awk,, sed,
Python, HTML,C/C++, etc.].

Skills:

Manual dexterity for hardware installations and repairs.

Other:

Excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated good
judgment and initiatives. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
and independently with minimum supervision and use initiative to
identify new systems and procedures for the smooth-running of the
Department's IT resources. Strong organizational, analytical, and
problem-solving skills. Ability to explain technical issues patiently in
a clear, concise, user-friendly manner. An eye for detail and accuracy
along with excellent problem solving skills. Proven ability to exercise
tact and use discretion regarding confidential matters. Facilitate the
efficient use of computer information technologies within the Geography
Department, by providing training, outreach, and consulting in the use
of hardware and software resources.
