My apologies to the Australians.  I have reread the original post, and it wasn't obvious to me that the trademark claim was held by a California group.  I have talked to my older colleagues, and they agree that "metadata" was a generic word before 1986; I'd like to find something in black-and-white, though.

FYI-

The 8th edition (2000) of Webster's New World Dictionary of Computer Terms has metadata as ONE word, not two (even thought the next entry "meta key" is two words) and not hyphenated! We just shelved our copy today.
