Can anyone recommend an academic repository that has a large
collection of road maps from the Automobile Club of Southern
California, going back to the early 20th century and with runs
of most editions of each map? (they're updated very frequently)

A geology professor here, who does a lot of work in the Mojave
Desert, is interested in using these fine maps to study the
development of roads in the area over the years, tying this to
physical landscape characteristics among other things.

He knows that ACSC has runs of their own maps in their archives
(see description at USC web site:
http://www.usc.edu/isd/locations/cst/idala/collections/collections_aaa.html
)
but he thinks they might be sensitive if they somehow construe
his research to look negatively upon ACSCs role in the
development of roads in the region or upon development in
general in the area.

So, he'd feel more comfortable using the resources of an
academic collection.

thanks,
        Mark
