Subject: a question about coding on some maps

A colleague asked me a question about coding on some maps, and since I don't know the answer, I thought someone on MAPS-L would.

Thank you for your help.

The question:

When using Hammond Maps, does anyone know what "H" stands for in the following
context: "Map I Europe 1919-39, Hammond H-46, H48 and H50?"
I've looked all over and so has the student who asked me.
