This appears to have been reprinted recently (some of the adverts in it
obviously postdate the supposed 1998 printing date!) so it may be a more
recent edition that forgot to update the edition information... , and I
bought my shrink-wrapped copy this week from Kinokuniya Books,in the
branch on the 6^th floor of the Isetan shopping mall.
The atlas covers the main urban area of Bangkok in 73 maps, most at
1:10,000 with 24 1:8,000 for the central areas. It is in English, and
classifies land as commercial, industrial, residential,entertainment,
development sites, public entities, religious, other built up,and green
areas. Rail lines, expressways, BTS (ie skytrain), the (nowabandoned)
Hopewell mass transit project lines, hospitals and petrol stations are
shown.
Most of the commercial, industrial etc sites are labelled with the name
of the company/apartment/factory/govt entity etc in English.
At this scale all lanes (sois) re shown and many named. An index is
given on pages76-188 by type of business: eg temples, joss houses,
mosques, churches,cemeteries, schools (by type), r ental apartments,
serviced apartments, govt accommodation,condos, amusement parks, art
galleries, massage, offices, shopping centres…quite detailed.
There is a 120x170 cm colour wall map at 1:10,000 also available from
the publishers for 2500baht (US$75)
Hopefully a 3^rd edition will be forthcoming soon (if this is not it)!
While 10 years old, it provides the only detailed (ie Soi-level) map of
Bangkok I know, and the landuse classification is very useful, given
that most tourist-oriented street maps use icons for a site, be it a
single building or an entire block.
