Alice:

Cannot (yet) verify your second paragraph/query. But, if a measure of
former communist East Germany's reaction to capitalist Gerald's 'Guide
to atlases, . . .' might be of interest - to anyone - I sought out the
following in RGS-IBG's Library collection -

Geography and earth sciences publications, 1973-75 : an author, title
and subject guide to books reviewed, and an index to the reviews /
compiled by John Van Balen. - [Ann Arbor MI :] Pierian Press, 1978. -
ISBN 0-87650-091-2

This is a 2-volume work (an earlier volume covered ca 1968-72 [?]) I
have occasionally remembered for obscure enquiries, but apparently not
well-known. The German review is indicated to be found in 'Petermann's
Geographische Mitteilungen', 1974, 118(3), 237; but I haven't checked
this out. Nor have I checked out Muriel Lock's 'Guide to the lit. of
geogr. and cartogr.'

Does anyone out there have the Special Libraries Association "Directory
of
members," 1948? and is Gerard listed as a member? [Our copy is missing,
natch.]

I believe his book, "Guide to atlases: world, regional, national,
thematic;
an international listing of atlases published since 1950," pub. 1971,
was
cited as a 'best reference' book in a listing of same for 1971, probably
in 1972. I had no luck in verifying this. Anyone know for sure?

Many thanks, Alice,
