My guess is that this marker was the official delineation of the City of
London, which would be seen by anyone travelling north on London Bridge,
and thus entering the City. The most famous marker is at Fleet Street and
Chancery Lane, I believe, called Temple Bar. It is a splendid monument. No
doubt Francis Herbert can give us the definitive word on this
issue.Francis?
