The Canadian peace keepers and international relief agency efforts in
eastern Zaire and Rwanda have been using the following maps, many of which
we have provided for them:

Michelin 955 Southern Africa scale 1:4,000,000 The French Michelin maps have
an excellent reputation for current road information for all of Africa.
Hundreds of these maps are being used for planning and transportation
efforts. They feature multilingual legends and detailed climate information
as well as comprehensive information on the road quality / surface types.
Printed on one side, not indexed.

AMC Africa Centra RV33101l scale 1:4,000,000 covers the region well and is
1994/1995 vintage an excellent map that competes with the Michelin series,
however the Michelin enjoys a better reputation over a longer period of time
for its African map series and is favored by many that have lived and worked
in the region. The road information on the AMC is not exagerated as much as
the Michelin and makes a quality briefing or planning map. No climate
information is given, printed on one side and not indexed.

Feytag & Berndt map of Kenya, Tanzania & Uganda scale 1:2,000,000 this
Austrian mapping company does a good detailed map of the region extending
just across the border into eastern Zaire. Unfortunately detailed climate
information obscures the map extending further into Zaire.

ITM 936 Uganda map is the best available map of Uganda at scale 1:800,000
and published by ITMB in Canada. The border areas with Zaire, Rwanda and
Tanzania are clearly shown.

ONC M-4 This Operational Navigation Chart at scale 1:1,000,000 covers
Eastern Zaire and all of Rwanda, Burundi and just into Tanzania. ONC charts
are aeronautical with hypsometric tints of colour and contours for
elevation. This is the best available map for eastern Zaire / Rwanda border
areas.

IGN of France publishes the Burundi map at 1:250,000 with a street plan of
Bujumbura this is the most detailed map available of the country.

No decent, current map exists for the entire countries of Rwanda and Zaire
and the Michelin or Freytag & Berndt are being used.
