If there's a French person who's living in Normandy on the list, they
may be able to help.  I was in Normandy in 1997 touring around and found
reprinted maps that sound quite similar to the maps you describe.  The
reprints had annotations on them indicating their source.  The one I
bought of the beaches area and the areas immediately behind the beaches
does have the source on it,
but no indication of the type of use.
