Subject: IPCC SRES OPEN Process Release

IPCC SRES OPEN PROCESS release

Following up the official announcement of Special Report on Emission
Scenarios Open Process (SRES OP) from IPCC WG III, we are pleased to
announce the release of the webserver for the process, an interactive
online application accessible via WWW browsers. This website enables the
researchers in the area of climatic changes to submit their new scenarios
or any comments to the writing team for the special report. It also can be
used as a window to know the current work of the IPCC SRES team regarding
the important report for the emission scenarios.

--- Access
IPCC SRES OP is available via the public URL:
                http://sres.ciesin.org/

--- Functionality
The webserver allows the user to:
 * browse through the current work of the IPCC SRES, including
scenario database, progress report, terms of reference, time
        schedule, literature review, etc.

 * provide the Model and Scenario Visualization (MSV) for the
modeling results from Message model of IIASA, IMAGE model of
RIVM, AIM model of NIES-Kyoto.U, and ASF model of PNNL.

 * most importantly, submit new scenarios and modeling results for
consideration to be included in the IPCC SRES report, or general
comments to improve SRES writing team's work.

In order to ensure the broadest participation possible, you are encouraged
to share this information actively with researchers in the area of
greenhouse gas emissions and their driving forces in your institution or
country. We also request your web manager to kindly link to this website
on your proper web pages. Thank you.

Enclosure: The Announcement from IPCC WG III.

The plenary session of IPCC in 1996 charged Working Group III of the Panel to
develop a Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES), including a new set of
scenarios for the emissions of greenhouse gases. The scenarios are
"non-intervention scenarios", implying that no explixit additional climate
policies are to be assumed. In early 1997, a writing team with broad
representation from all regions and from industrial and environmental ngos
started the preparation of this report under the leadership of
Dr. Nebojsa Nakicenovic of IIASA. By now, the writing team has (a) performed
an extensive review of the literature, pertinent to emissions of greenhouse
gases and the associated driving forces, (b) developed an extensive scenario
database, (c) developed four sets of qualitative storylines describing
possible futures, and (d) concluded a preliminary quantification of these
storylines in terms of energy and landuse emissions, based on the modelling
work of 6 different groups. These "template scenarios" are representative of
the wide spectrum of scenarios found in the literature.

An important component of the terms of reference of SRES is a so-called open
process, to stimulate the participation of a group of experts wider than the
writing team, especially from different regions and societal sectors. In order
to allow the writing team to take the input into the open process into account
while drafting the final report from October 1998 to March 1999, the open
process will take place in the last five months of 1998. Three main
contributions are invited: (a) scenarios that have escaped the attention of
the writing team, (b) new scenario quantifications based on the template
scenarios, and (c) general suggestions to add to the work of the writing team
to date. The open process will be implemented by CIESIN (The Center for
International Earth Science Information Network, Columbia University) in the
USA in close collaboration with the Technical Support Unit of Working Group
III and the Energy Research Foundation in the Netherlands, and
Dr. Nakicenovic. The governments of the United States and the Netherlands
have kindly offered to support this important exercise financially. To the
extent possible, the open process will take place electronically,
through the World Wide Web Those who do not have access to Internet are
adviced to contact CIESIN:
