Subject: Jan Dixon

It is with great sadness that I send this e-mail.

I received a call this afternoon from Donna Daniels, Head of Reference
at the University of Arkansas Mullins Library in Fayetteville.

Donna called to tell me that Jan Dixon had passed away on October 21 and
to ask me to let the rest of the map library community know.

From the e-mail that Donna sent to me after our call:
Jan had myeloid dysplasia syndrome (MDS) which transformed into myeloid
leukemia in early August. Jan was at MD Anderson in Texas when she
received the news. Jan was forever upbeat about the outcome even though
she knew it would be a long journey. She had just received word that
they had found a 10 for 10 criteria match for a bone marrow transplant.
Jan was to leave for Houston on Nov.1 to begin the process. Her Dr.’s
found her passing shocking and unexpected. Here is the obituary and
the link to the library website.

And the text from the obituary:
Janet Bergquist Dixon, passed away on October 21, 2009 after losing her
battle with leukemia. She was born July 22, 1952 in Pasadena, California
to Barbara and Lyle Bergquist. She earned a bachelor’s degree in
environmental science from Prescott College in Arizona, Masters degrees
in Geography from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Library and
Information Science from the University of Texas, Austin. Before moving
to Fayetteville and the University of Arkansas, she worked as an
Environmental Specialist/Park Planner for the U.S. National Park Service
at their Denver Service Center principally on National Seashores.

She loved the out of doors, especially hiking and camping with her
family and friends in the beauty of America’s public lands. The role she
played in conservation in several of the Nation’s National Parks was
especially satisfying to her. Jan especially enjoyed the opportunities
for travel with her family that her children’s international adventures
provided while exchange students in Europe. Visits and travel with her
extended family and friends in Australia was a significantly enriching
part of her life. In recent years she derived great pleasure from
singing in the choir at First United Presbyterian Church.

Jan was a librarian at the University of Arkansas libraries where she
has worked for over 25 years. She served as the Map Librarian and
subject reference librarian for the Departments of Geoscience and
Anthropology as well as for the Environmental Dynamics doctoral program.
Jan was a highly respected map librarian in the library community where
she participated actively in leadership roles at state, regional,
national and international levels. On the U of A campus she was admired
and respected by all of the students and faculty she served and by her
colleagues. She will always be remembered for her energetic dedication
to her work as well as for her constantly cheerful nature, her
infectious smile and characteristic laugh. Jan is survived by her
husband of 30 years John, her son Colin of Sydney, Australia, her
daughter, Bronwyn, her brother Daryl Bergquist and sister-in-law Sara
Rose of Blountsville, Alabama, and her father Lyle Bergquist of
Fayetteville. A memorial service will be held in Jan’s honor on Tuesday
November 17th, 2009 at First United Presbyterian Church, Fayetteville at
2pm. Memorials can be made to First United Presbyterian Church 695
Calvin Street, Fayetteville, AR, 72703.
