With the underlying conviction that sheep (at least in their natural
state) really don't need shepherds, perhaps it's past time to enlighten
our clueless politicians of all stripes that lack of ready and detailed
data/knowledge about United States isn't going to make its National,
State or Local Governments; People; or Entrepreneurial Class competitive
in the 21st Century....

I just got this official response from the U.S. Census Bureau about the
fate of the Statistical Abstract of the United States and the
Statistical Compendia Branch.

Subject: Re: Statistical Abstract of the U.S. Discontinued?

Dear Mr Diaz:

The President's FY 2012 Budget terminates the Statistical Abstract
including all of its components. The statistical compendia branch
program consists of the Statistical Abstract of the United States and
its supplemental products: USA Counties, State and Metropolitan Area
Data Book, County and City Data Book, State and County Quick Facts, and
MapStats.
Given the current budget environment , the Census Bureau made difficult
choices to terminate and reduce a number of existing programs in order
to acquire funds for higher priority programs.

Final decisions about the FY 2012 budget are the responsibility of the
Congress

Sincerely,

Ian O'Brien
Branch Chief, Statistical Compendia Branch, ACSD US Census Bureau

Dear U.S. Census Bureau,

I have been hearing through the grapevine that there is a possibility of
discontinuing the Statistical Abstract of the United States? Is that
so?

Please don't make this very valuable reference title disappear. It is a
mainstay of reference information that needs to continue. The title
packs a punch and is really easy to use. One of the very few titles
that the government makes that works well.

I appreciate any help you can give me.
