>Subject: rand mcnally to purchase thomas brothers

In today's Orange County Register, 11/13/98

Rand McNally will purchase Thomas Brothers maps of Irvine, CA. They
will keep the Thomas Brothers quality brand name for a new and expanded
series of similary Thomas Bros-type map books for around the country.
Rand McNally's chair Henry J. Feinberg said that their own maps have
"not been as intelligent and well-crafted as Thomas Bros." Rand McNally
produces most of its local maps on paper, but because Thomas Bros.
computerized back in the late 1980s, it can produce many of its maps on
paper or disc. Thomas Bros. annual sales are about $30 million, about
1/6 of Rand McNally.
