There's stuff in the literature (e.g., Mary Larsgaard's book, org
journals/newsletters), and several conversations in the Maps-l archives.
Which is another way of saying that I compiled this info a few years
ago, did a big shift, and now don't remember any of it. ;)

But, it really depends. Are the maps uniform in size (e.g., 7.5-minutes
maps), or variable? Are they mounted or encapsulated? Divided into
folders? Weight is a big concern for map case/drawer integrity (not to
mention building integrity)--overfilled drawers can warp/bend over time
and be difficult to pull in/out. Likewise, overfilled drawers make
access and shelving very cumbersome, which likely means more damage to
the maps as users and staff get frustrated, try to take shortcuts, tear
things, shove 'em in and walk away, etc. Heavily used collections will
need to be really easy to access; less-used collections can maybe afford
to be less friendly, but not much less unless they're accessed only by
trained, conscientious, and physically strong staff.

But check the literature. Guidelines, if not rules or formulas, are out
there.

     I am hoping the good folks at MAPS-L can help me out.
     We are in the planning stages on how to reconfigure our Maps Library.
     Some of our map case drawers are overflowing and what we need to figure
     out is the optimum number of maps per drawer. Has anyone come up with a
     formula?
     Any help you can give me would be most appreciated.
