Hi All,

I've just started cataloging maps and am working on the USGS 1:24,000-scale
topographic maps. I need some help understanding what I'm looking at.

I have two maps of Big Meadows Quadrangle, Virginia 7.5 minute series, 1965,
photorevised 1979. The information on the maps is identical except for the
following information. One map has "DMA 5361 III SW-Series V834" and
"38078-E4-TF-024". The other has "AMS 5361 III SW-Series V8334" and
"N3830-W7822.5/7.5" What do these numbers refer to? And, more importantly,
does the fact that these numbers are different mean that I need two separate
bibliographic records for the two maps? The records on OCLC were created by
staff in our library before my time here, and my library is the only one who
has any holdings attached to the records. I want to know if the two records
are necessary or if one would suffice.

I would appreciate any guidance in this area that you can give. Thank you.
