1)
A very nice new atlas of East Timor is now available (in Portuguese).
Lovely maps with text. It can be bought in Dili itself, or from the
publishers in Lisbon. For details: go to http://www.lidel.pt
<http://www.lidel.pt/> click the rotating "online " sign, then click
"edicoes" in the top left corner of screen, then click "portuges timor",
second on the list that appears then click "novidades" or "portugues
timor" (they both go to the same list). You get a list of books on East
Timor. The top two are an atlas of East Timor, hardback and paperback
editions. I'd recommend the hardback as the softback is likely to break
easily due to the number and weight of the pages.

It appears the Australian govt aid agency AUSAID helped the East
Timorese Ministry of Ag & Fish's Agriculture and Land Use GIS Unit to
pay for/produce an A3 1:1M thematic atlas of E.Timor using probably more
reliable data than the above atlas.
The atlas included maps on:
soil taxonomy
agroclimatic zones
annual rainfall
average daily temp: max
average daily temp: min
demography
drought hazard
elevation
food security in february
forest status
geological formation
landuse
primary crops grown at suco (ie small admin unit) level
etc

I have enquired at AUSAID for more info, and they said:

  >the ALGIS unit of the East Timor Department
  >of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry did print a short run of an
atlas in
  >the past at a cost of US$30 per copy. When they've been asked to
provide a
  >second print run this request has been refused due to the cost.

  >However, it might be possible that they will run further copies if
the job
  >is large enough. Could you give us an indication of how many copies you
  >would like and whether you are happy with the price and we will forward
  >your request to the Department.

Can anyone (individuals and institutions) interested in purchasing a
copy at say US$30 (plus postage) please let me know, and we can see if
the East Timorese will deign to reprint it. No money need be stumped up
now, I just want to know who would purchase it if it would become
available at this price.
Feel free to pass this on to anyone else who may be interested, and I'll
collate all replies.
