*Duties and Responsibilities*



Provides specialized reference service in the Map Collection utilizing a
high level of expertise in cartography and geography, including use of
standard electronic and print library resources and geographic
information system (GIS) technology.
Performs indexing and classification of maps and digital files. Develops
classification and indexing based on current geographic standards and
Map Collection indexing policies and procedures.
Assists patrons with geographic information systems (GIS) software
questions.
Processes selected materials received through the Federal Depository
Library Program according to Government Printing Office guidelines.
Maintains and updates holdings and collection inventories for depository
materials.
Creates and maintains accurate indexing records to provide access to Map
Collection materials.
Maintains physical Collection organization and assists Map
Librarian/Archivist with preservation and maintenance of Collection
materials.
Maintains map acquisition statistics for maps received and processed and
other Map Collection statistics as assigned.
Consults with the Map Librarian/Archivist regarding collection
development in areas of specialized geographic, cartographic, subject
and/or language expertise.

Schedule varies from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 11:00 am. to 8:00 p.m.
Monday through Thursday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Fridays. Weekends, and
some holidays on a rotating schedule.



*Minimum Qualifications*



Bachelor's degree AND two years' progressively responsible library
experience; OR, Six years' progressively responsible library experience;
OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which
comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.



*Desired Qualifications*



Bachelor's degree in geography preferred. Demonstrated experience with:
geographic information systems (GIS) and/or other computerized mapping
software; academic libraries; map collections; computer applications,
including word-processing, database and spreadsheet programs; aerial
photography, satellite imagery or related remotely sensed materials.
Demonstrated knowledge of: geography and cartography; FGDC (Federal
Geographic Data Committee) indexing standards. Effective verbal and
written communication skills.

This position involves retrieving and filing materials in cases from
four inches off the floor to seven feet high.
