On 8 May Alberta Wood enquired about the city, town or village named
Passaic, which had a newspaper titled Passaic Daily News. I have
checked the 1990 Gazetteer of New Zealand on microfiche, and no such
name appears. I have also checked various older guides to New
Zealand placenames, with no success. There is a comprehensive
history of New Zealand newspapers (Schofield, G.H., Newspapers in New
Zealand. Wellington, Reed, 1958) and the newspaper title does not
appear in that. The name Passaic does not sound like a New Zealand
name, and my conclusion is that it is not in fact a NZ name at all.
But nice to have an enquiry about NZ, and good to be able to reply,
as MAPS-L is really appreciated as a way of keeping in touch with the
map world.
