Well worth reading: "The Book Thief: A true tale of bibliomania,"
by Philip Weiss, in HARPER'S MAGAZINE, January 1994, pp. 37-56.
 
The thief in question is Stephen Blumberg, who stole books (and
maps, plates, etc.) from more than 300 libraries in the USA and
Canada.
