Subject: Cambodian and Thai maps/atlases

Just back from Cambodia, here is information on new maps and atlases from Cambodia and Thailand.
Omni Resources in the US should be able to supply all these.

CAMBODIA

83-sheet sets of "Cambodia 1:100,000" topographic maps.
30’ x 30’ coverage using standard numbering (eg Phnom Penh sheet is #5932)
Lithographed, or colour plots from digital files.
Produced c.2003 by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Cambodian Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT)
Sold individually or as bagged sets in the Phnom Penh Central Market and presumably by MPWT too. Digital files may also be available from MPWT.
In English. I believe Khmer language versions are also available, but didn’t see any.

provincial road maps of Cambodia (24 per set)
Colour plots from digital files. In English.
Sold individually or as bagged sets in the Phnom Penh Central Market.

provincial geological maps of Cambodia (nominally 24, but three or four of the smaller provinces were not available).
Colour plots from digital files. In English.
Sold individually or as bagged sets in the Phnom Penh Central Market.

Provincial maps. (set of 24) These are montaged scanned 250k JOGs colour plotted with province and district boundaries overlaid. In English.
Sold individually or as bagged sets in the Phnom Penh Central Market.

“The Atlas of Cambodia: national poverty and environment maps”, CD-Rom published 2007 by Save Cambodia’s Wildlife (SCW), in association with Danida (Danish government aid agency). This includes an ARC Reader package to view the zoomable (up to 1:50,000) layered GIS maps. In English, using Cambodian government-approved toponymic romanisation.

“The School Atlas of Cambodia” 53pp. A4 paperback with accompanying 14-pp. A4 paperback “Teacher’s guide”. Bilingual (English/Khmer) high school atlas and guide derived from the above CD. ISBN 99950-814-4-X

“The Atlas of Cambodia: national poverty and environment maps”, hardback atlas,. ISBN 978-99950-814-2-3. Published 2006 by Save Cambodia’s Wildlife (SCW), in association with Danida (Danish government aid agency). In English.

Further details on the above 3 items at SCW’s website:www.cambodiaswildlife.org

“Guide Total des routes du Cambodge 2008 / total Road Atlas of Cambodia 2008”, 4th ed. ISBN 9995084202. Published by the Total oil company and sold in its petrol stations as well as in bookshops. This is a spiral bound, 142pp, A4 bilingual (English/French) road atlas/tourist guide to the country with national maps and city plans.

The Ecole Francaise d’Extreme Orient in association with the Cambodian Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts produce provincial archaeological maps (presumably there’s a set of 24 to cover the country). These locate archaeological sites and have large-scale plans of the major sites. I only saw 3 or 4 different sheets on sale, but full sets may be available.

Geological maps
****************
The 1:250,000 sheets on JOG sheetlines (including the 7 sheets of “Geology of Northern Thailand” produced with German aid) are being replaced with provincial maps. 34 have been produced to date, out of 76 provinces, mainly northern and southern regions. Presumably the smaller central plains provinces will be combined together so there won’t be 76 sheets in the final set! The new series is bilingual English/Thai, except for 8 sheets covering the northernmost 8 provinces, which are in Thai only.

Smaller and larger scale geological, mineral and other rocky maps are also available, in Thai, English or bilingual editions.

Thai topographic maps 1:50,000 L7018S
*************************************
283 sheets are now available in this civilian version of the 1:50,000 military series L7018. These twin series were produced in the 1990s and early 2000s. The official L7018 series is complete, but not available outside government officials. The only difference in the series appears to be the lack of the Thai national grid on the civilian editions.
These series replace the older 1:50,000 twin series L7017 and its civilian edition L7017S dating from the 1970s to early 1990s, but these older series are still available for purchase.

Currently, L7108S is available for the southern peninsula (minus the three southernmost provinces which are in 'unrest': Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat), and as far northwards as 6deg 30m N, but only between 98d45m and 103d00m E.
Border sheets, and areas with military bases etc (eg Sattahip) are not available, nor unfortunately is Bangkok.
Much of what is available is also available in the older L7017S series. Much of the north and northeast not yet covered by L7018S are available in L7017S.
Strangely, numerous sheets of L7018S have been released where L7017S was and is not available!
For the record, 204 sheets of L7017S offer coverage where L7018S is not yet available, giving total publicly-available coverage for Thailand as 283 + 204 = 487 sheets.
