STS CONFERENCE PROGRAM
"Preserving the Record of Science and Technology: A Call to
Action". Monday, June 26, 8:00 - 11:00 a.m.  Hotel Intercontinental
- Grand BR.  Co-sponsored by STS and the ALCTS Preservation and
Reformatting, and the Collection Development and Management
Sections.
 
The Program will focus on issues in the preservation of science and
technology materials.  Speakers will analyze the scientific process
and the resulting documentation, report on the preservation status
of sci-tech materials, and discuss models for a disciplinary
approach to preservation.
 
Presentations:
Helen Samuels, Massachusetts Institute of Technology:  "What is the
Record of Science and Technology?".
 
Joan Warnow-Bluett, Associate Director, American Institute of
Physics, "The Role of Discipline History Centers".
 
Samuel Demas, Cornell University  "Building Alliances for
Disciplinary Preservation".
 
POSTER SESSIONS
Poster sessions will follow the program. Hotel Continental - Empire

STS RECEPTION
The STS Reception in Chicago will be held at the Adler Planetarium
on Sunday, June 25 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. There will be refreshments
and a Sky Show in the Universe Theater, as well as an opportunity
to shop in the Planetarium's gift shop for celestial t-shirts and
books.  The Planetarium is located in a landmark building on
Chicago's lakefront.
 
PROGRAM (STS CO-SPONSORED)
"When Selectors Collide:  The Challenge of Interdisciplinary
Scholarship for Collection Development". Sunday, June 25, 1995 9:00
- 11:00 a.m. Hyatt Regency - Toronto. Collection Development for
the Practitioner Committee, CMDS, ALCTS; with co-sponsors:
RASD-CODES (Collection Development and Evaluation Section) ACRL-WSS
(Women's Studies Section), and ACRL-STS (Science and Technology
Section).
 
Panelists:  Joan Ariel, Women Studies Librarian and
Academic Coordinator, University of California, Irvine; Craig
Likness, Associate Director, Public Services and Collections,
Trinity University; Bill Robnett, Director, Central-Science
Library, Vanderbilt University.
 
Scholarship is increasingly crossing the boundaries of established
disciplines at the same time that electronic information formats
are altering traditional modes of scholarly communication.  In the
face of these concurrent changes, how well do the practices and
organization of collection development activities serve the
selector? The panelists will discuss how they meet the challenges
of selecting, budgeting, managing collections and organizing
collection development in the new environment.
 
DISCUSSION GROUPS
 
THE COLLEGE SCIENCE LIBRARIANS DISCUSSION GROUP.  Saturday, June
24, 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Hyatt Regency - Horner.  The discussion topic
is "Electronic Science Journals in the Undergraduate College
Library".  What are science librarians at smaller colleges doing,
or planning to do, about providing access to these journals?  What
about issues such as type and level of access; cataloging; and
deciding whether to cancel equivalent print subscriptions?  In
keeping with "tradition", members of the CSLDG also will be getting
together for dinner Saturday evening.  Please contact Victoria

SCIENCE DATABASES DISCUSSION GROUP. Sunday June 25, 9:30 - 11:00
a.m. Hyatt Regency - Dusable.  Gad Engler, Engineering and Patents
reference Librarian, Louisiana State Library will begin the
discussion with the presentation -  "Web Worms and WAIS: Search
Engines on the World Wide Web".
 
GENERAL DISCUSSION GROUP. Sunday, June 25, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Drake -
 Georgian.  Shelley Phipps and Doug Jones, University of Arizona,
will open the discussion with the presentation, "Organizational
Trends in Sci-Tech Libraries: Examples from the University of
Arizona".
 
FORUM VI. sunday June 25, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Drake - Georgian. The
Forum provides a venue for librarians to present recent research or
to describe research in progress.  The presentations schedule this
year are: "Electronic Journal Literature: Implications for Scholars
by Jan Olsen, Cornell University; "CLIP (Chemical Literature
Intelligent Profile); Evolution of Prepublication Announcement and
alerting Service for chemistry" by Martin Kesselman and Howard
Dess, Rutgers University; and "A Model Scholar's Outpost on the
Electronic Frontier" by Gayle Baker and Jeff Heck, University of
Tennessee.
