Hi Hiroyuki,

This article also has something about your topic I think. Although it is a
technical paper, but has some information about the libraries and GIS.

Dear all,

I am writing a paper on current situation of GIS and libraries in the
United States for a Japanese peer review journal, Information science
and technology. When I was searching literature, I found an article
"Managing GIS in Academic Libraries" by Christopher Badurek (WAML
Information Bulletin 31(2) March 2000) and the author conducted a simple
survey in 1999. I would like to do same survey so that I can compare
situation of GIS in academic libraries between 1999 and 2009.

It would be helpful if you would take a moment to please answer the
following 8 brief questions. This survey will be completely
confidential and the name of your institution/or library will not be
revealed in any way. I will share the result of my comparative study on
this list. Please send your replay to my email address [log in to unmask]
<mailto:[log in to unmask]> not to gis4lib at your earliest convenience.

At last but not least, Mr. Bardurek is most likely in this mailing list
because he had MLIS and was working toward another degree in the
department of Geography when this article was published. Mr. Bardurek,
I hope you don't mind I use your survey question and thank you for
sharing your study with us.

1. How many GIS workstations are available for users?
2. What type of platform do the majority of your workstations run on?
         PC
         Unix
         Mac
3. How satisfied are you with your current hardware to meet needs of
library users?
         1 (very satisfied) 2 3 4 5 (very disappointed)
4. What GIS software package is used most on your workstations?
         ArcView
         ArcInfo
         MapInfo
Other (please specify):
5. How satisfied are you with this production?
          1 (very easy) 2 3 4 5 (very difficult)
6. How would you rate ease of use of this product for library users?
          1 (very satisfied) 2 3 4 5 (very disappointed)
7. How much overall GIS library or service center staff time is spent
assisting and instructing users to use GIS in your library? ___%
8. On average, how often each day are your GIS workstations used by
library users?
_____ number of times per day

Thank you for your cooperation in advance,

Hiroyuki Good
