Subject: MAPS-L: storing maps in boxes
Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2005

We store our historical maps in map drawers and boxes, picking a storage
medium that is closest to the size of the item. We use 10 x 15 x 2.5"
MS boxes for the very smallest, and 16 x 20, 20 x 24, and 23 x 30
oversize boxes for maps smaller than map drawer size. We also use two
sizes of map drawers - the large 36 x 48 drawers and the smaller 24 x 36
drawers (approximate size). We put as many maps as we can in mylar, but
not all of them. And, we put 3-5 maps in the large map folders, and
generally up to 6 maps in the other folders, depending on the condition
of the maps. Each box has a map box number, and we have a location
chart in the stacks for stack assistants to consult to pull maps. When
possible, we use the oversize boxes with the drop down fronts. The
public cannot come back in our stack areas to browse through maps, thus
the wear and tear on the boxes is controllable. We do periodically
replace boxes that become beat up from repeated use. If the general publ!
ic or student researchers are allowed in your stack or map drawer
areas to pull their own maps, expect a lot of wear and tear on the boxes
and lots of misfilings.

Hope this helps,

Subject: storing maps in boxes
Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2005

The University of Maryland is engaged in a long-term project to have
~30,000 US Congressional Serial
Set maps flattened, de-acidified and encapsulated in mylar. We don't
currently have map cases to
properly accommodate all those items (and I'm not sure if/when we will),
so we've considered using
archival boxes to store the smaller items (~19,000 are 11" x 14" or
smaller). Ostensibly, boxes
are flexible, inexpensive and easy to handle. Still, I imagine there are
also downsides. Does
anybody have experience with storing maps like this? Any advice? Am I
brilliant or nuts (or neither)
for thinking this might be a good solution?!? ;)

Thanks very much.
