Subject: advice on shipping fragile maps

We are preparing to digitize some of our Sanborn fire insurance map
collection, and will need to ship the maps to be scanned. We do not want
to use tubes (the maps would arrive curled, which would prolong the
process, and we will be shipping several very large batches). Does
anyone have any experience shipping maps in boxes?

We are wondering specifically about packing them so they will not slip
inside the box, what type of box might work best (we currently have
archival boxes), and if there are any shipping companies who regularly
handle materials like this (i.e. might be gentler with them than UPS or
FedEx).

Any advice (either positive or negative) is most appreciated.
