AMERICAN GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY LIBRARY

The American Geographical Society Library, UW-Milwaukee Libraries, is
seeking a creative, enthusiastic librarian to assist the many groups
active in GIS related instruction and research across the UWM campus.
The American Geographical Society Library, one of North America's
foremost geography and map collections, was transferred to the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries in 1978 from the Society's
headquarters in New York City, where it had resided since 1851. The AGS
Library has been actively involved in providing digital spatial data
services for nearly two decades. This full-time Academic Professional
position is at the Associate rank. As the incumbent builds experience at
UWM through excellence in job performance, professional development and
service, s/he may qualify for continuing appointment and/or promotion to
higher ranks.

Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Digital Spatial Data/GIS Librarian is responsible for the daily
operations of the Digital Spatial Data Clearinghouse. Responsibilities
include: providing direct, general, and specialized reference service to
digital spatial data collections; overseeing collection development,
metadata creation, archiving and maintaining of digital spatial data
clearinghouse materials; working with the Libraries Systems department
to keep in operational order all computer and peripheral equipment
related to the digital spatial data clearinghouse; providing digital
spatial data instruction to faculty, staff and students as requested;
consulting with Libraries staff to develop spatial data collections;
maintaining GIS web pages; serving as Libraries contact representative
to appropriate academic department(s); and providing backup general
reference services in the AGS Library. This position reports to the
Curator of the American Geographical Society Library.

Minimum Qualifications:
MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited (or equivalent) institution; experience
with geographic information systems and digital spatial data;
demonstrated knowledge of maps in traditional formats and cartographic
information in digital form; experience with database and web design;
proven analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work well
independently and with others; demonstrated ability to communicate
effectively; good customer service skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in geography, cartography or related discipline; experience
working in an academic or research library; and supervisory experience.
