Subject: AMS Joint Operation Graphics (JOGS) historical availability

Hi,

I'm preparing a manuscript where I am, in part, promoting the value of
the AMS Joint Operation Graphics (JOGs) 1:250,000 maps as a reference
source for international locations which are otherwise poorly mapped, or
have limited map coverage. Can someone tell me what the historic
availability of the JOG maps have been-- specifically, have they always
been in the public domain due to being distributed through the College
depository program? If they were ever considered classified, when did
they become declassified?

Currently, I have two references for the history and availability of the
JOGSs, but I assume more has been written about them.

     1) Anderson, J. M. (2001) Forgotten battles, forgotten maps:
resources for reconstructing historical topographical intelligence
using Army Map Service materials. Historical Geography, 29:79-91.

     2) Lee, K. D. (2006) Access to aeronautical charts and data by the
U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency: an ominous trend.
Journal of Map and Geography Libraries, 3, 5-37.

Any answers to these questions, or additional references people have on
the history of JOGs production, coverage, and public availability would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Ryan
