RGS GOLD MEDAL FOR Dr ALAN BAKER

Her Majesty the Queen has approved the award of the Founder's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society to  Dr Alan Baker, a retired Lecturer in the Department of Geography, University of Cambridge, UK.

Since 1832, the Society's prestigious medals and awards have recognised excellence in geographical research and fieldwork, teaching and public engagement. The Founder's Medal is one of the Society's two Gold Medals which are the highest distinctions awarded by the Society annually. The Society's two Gold Medals are among the highest international accolades in the field of geography.

Dr Alan Baker  retired from his Cambridge University post in 2001. He is a Life Fellow of Emmanuel College. As an historical geographer, he has researched and published articles and books on the social geography of rural France during the nineteenth century and on the relations of history and geography as academic disciplines. In 2002 Dr Baker was elected a a Liberal Democrat Councillor for Cambridge and has been Chair of Cambridge City's Planning Committee since 2003.
