The University of Alabama Libraries is seeking a highly motivated
individual for the position of Special Collections Cataloger. The
Special Collections Cataloger performs original and complex copy
cataloging, retrospective conversion, and authority work following
prescribed national and local standards. The position supervises two
staff members who perform copy cataloging. Special Collections at the
University of Alabama (http://www.lib.ua.edu/libraries/hoole) include
collections in the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library, University of
Alabama Archives, and the A.S. Williams III Americana Collection
(http://www.lib.ua.edu/williamscollection). Materials in the collections
include monographs, serials, manuscript material, photographs, maps, and
ephemera relating primarily to the history and culture of the South.
This position reports to the Associate Dean for Special Collections to
set processing priorities and practices unique to special collections
materials. The incumbent serves as liaison to Cataloging and Metadata
Services (CMS) and in this capacity works closely with the head of CMS
to assure that the Libraries’ cataloging practices and standards are
followed. The incumbent is also expected to maintains awareness of, and
adhere to, special collections and general cataloging issues and
standards, metadata standards and librarianship.
