Stanford University Libraries and the Hopkins Marine Station are seeking candidates for an exciting job opportunity to manage a premier marine science library and also serve as assistant to the Director at a world-renowned marine laboratory.  As head librarian & bibliographer, the successful candidate will lead a small staff in providing the full range of traditional library services in addition to expanding forward-looking enterprises such as GIS, scientific data management, digital archiving, etc.  As assistant to the director for the Station, the library manager will be involved with promoting Hopkins to both the academic community and the public at large.  POSITION TITLE:  
 Head Librarian & Bibliographer, Harold A. Miller Library
 Assistant to the Director, Hopkins Marine Station
 CLASSIFICATION: Librarian or Senior Librarian

Job Purpose:

Idyllically situated on the coast of the picturesque Monterey Bay, the Miller Library serves Hopkins Marine Station, the first marine laboratory on the west coast of North America. The Station is a part of Stanford University and the Library includes an extensive collection of literature in the marine sciences as well as digital access to an extensive range of materials in all disciplines. The Head Librarian is a member of the Science and Engineering Resource Group of the Stanford Libraries and also serves as assistant to the Director of Hopkins Marine Station. As a member of the Stanford Libraries, the Head of the Miller Library will be engaged in cutting edge work relating to STEM data management and digital library development. Core Duties at the Miller Library (60% time)
Defines goals, sets policies, makes plans, and manages the Harold A. Miller Library.
Maintains contact with faculty, students, and staff at Hopkins Marine Station to ensure that library service adequately supports current research and teaching programs.
Provides reference and research services.
Keeps abreast of current information products and literature in all appropriate formats and trends of publication and distribution of information in the marine sciences including the management and archiving of scientific data sets.
Selects current and retrospective materials in the marine sciences and related disciplines according to established policies and practice. Evaluates and maintains collections and archives.
In conjunction with the Science Data Librarian, maintains and enhances liaison efforts and partnerships with Hopkins researchers to identify, collect, curate, and preserve research data from historical and ongoing research projects. Promotes the use of the Stanford Digital Repository and good data management practices among Hopkins researchers.
Develops and implements library instruction programs in the marine sciences including support and training for users of library search interfaces and commercial search systems.
Oversees and implements new information technologies and IT policy in the Miller Library.
Coordinates Miller Library services, activities, and the collection development program with other Science and Engineering Resource Group branch libraries.
Contributes to library-wide planning and collaborates with colleagues on main campus.
Serves on University and Library committees as appropriate.
 
Core Duties as Assistant to the Director (40% time)
 
1. Provides public relations and development support to the Director of Hopkins Marine Station
 
     a.  Answers queries about the lab from the press, prospective students, and 
          the public.

     b. Coordinates and/or leads tours of the lab.
 
     c.  Arranges for speakers and coordinates events for the Friends of Hopkins 
          fundraising group.
               
     d.  Organizes Station-wide open house for the public every 3 to 5 years
 
     e.  Organizes and produces an annual newsletter for alumni and donors.
 
2. Provides computer and network support for the station.
 
      a.  Helps maintain the Station's web pages and email distribution lists, as 
           well as posts news and information on other media platforms such as 
           Facebook, Twitter etc..
 
      b.  Installs Macintosh network hardware and software as needed.
 
      c.  Troubleshoots email, network, and data transfer problems.
 
     d.   Provides general consulting on computers and networking.
Qualifications
 
 
1. In-depth knowledge of marine biology and the research process is required, as demonstrated by academic credentials or work history. An advanced degree in Biology, Botany, or Zoology is preferred.
 
2. An exceptional service ethic as demonstrated by ability to work effectively in a large organization to meet the needs of faculty and students and to help develop and champion new services and products that support research and education.
 
3. Strong knowledge of information management and the literature in the marine sciences and its organization is required.  An MLS degree from an accredited graduate school is acceptable evidence of training in information management, though Stanford will accept the demonstrated equivalent in training and experience. General knowledge of collection development principles and practices is required.
Working experience with the relevant literature as demonstrated through academic work or library work experience is required.
 
4. Four to five years of public service experience with supervisory responsibility and significant relevant collection development experience are required.  Comparable successful experience in a non-library environment will be considered as equivalent.
 
5. Effective supervisory and management competence is required, as is the demonstrated ability to contribute usefully to planning and implementation of new and improved services and resources. Preferred evidence would be successful work in a research library.
 
6. A demonstrated history of innovation is required. Evidence of user advocacy in proposing, implementing, and adopting new tools and services is strongly desired.
 
7. Evidence of the ability to work independently, but in a manner consistent with organization policies and needs, is required.
 
8. Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with faculty, students, and library staff is required.  Ability to write effective web posts, newspaper descriptions of events, newsletter entries, advertisements for public events, and other materials central to the Station and Library’s mission is required. Ability to perform effectively in and contribute successfully to a diverse, multicultural workplace is required.
 
9. Experience with microcomputers and automated systems is required. Experience with implementing information technology in libraries is preferred.
 
10. Ability to work with donors is required.  Experience related to fundraising experience is desirable.
 
 
Background:
 
Stanford University is a private educational institution with an emphasis on research and a strong commitment to excellence. The libraries of Stanford include the University Libraries system and 5 "coordinate" (school and institute) libraries.  The Stanford University Libraries consist of a main research library (Green Library), Lathrop Library (technology services & study spaces), and 11 research branch libraries serving science, technology, social science, & humanities programs, and 3 auxiliary libraries housing less-used or overflow materials.
 
The Harold A. Miller Library is one of five science and engineering research branch libraries that form the Science and Engineering Resource Group. The Miller Library has primary responsibility for providing services to the faculty, students, and staff at Hopkins Marine Station.  The collection contains approximately 43,000 volumes that are supported by a half a dozen endowed book funds.  The library provides access to a myriad of electronic resources while also housing an archives and rare book collection.  The staff consists of 1 FTE support staff plus money for an hourly assistant.

Established in 1892, Hopkins Marine Station is the oldest marine laboratory on the west coast of North America.  It is located 90 mile south of Stanford's main campus on the southern part of Monterey Bay. There are 10 resident faculty that teach and maintain diverse research programs that range from marine biology, genetics, development, biomechanics, animal physiology, neurophysiology, and conservation. It is situated among a growing community of marine related institutions including the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, the Naval Post Graduate School, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, California State University at Monterey Bay, UC Santa Cruz Long Marine Lab, Fleet Numerical Oceanographic Center, NOAA SWFSC Fisheries Ecology Division, and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
