Program Description
Friday - NSDI Strategic Plan Workshop
Developing Action Plans for the NSDI Strategic Plan
At the Fall NSDI Strategic Planning Meeting, a Brainstorming Session of State
and Federal government officials identified action items to implement the
NSDI Strategic Plan. This workshop is a continuation of that session with the
expressed objective of: 1) clarifying the action items; 2) prioritizing the
issues that are most important to the States, and  3) developing more
detailed action plans for the prioritized action items. These action plans
will be used by NSGIC and the FGDC staff to propose an agenda for the Spring
Meeting of the FGDC Steering Committee which will be devoted to these issues.
 
Saturday - Education Session
How to Better Partner with Federal Agencies
A number of presenters from Federal and State agencies will describe
partnering programs between Federal and State agencies and how they were
initiated.
 
A Study of US Geographic Information Resources
The National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA) has organized a panel
consisting of prominent public and private officials to address the following
questions:
 
 1. Is geographic information critical to keeping the US competitive in a
global economy?
 
 2. What is the role of the federal government in civilian surveying,
mapping, and other geographic information given recent technological trends'?
 
 3. What functions in government should be commercialized or privatized?
 
 4. Are there opportunities to restructure federal surveying, mapping, and
other geographic information functions to achieve greater economy and
performance?

     Description of activity to develop a response to the NAPA issues.
 
Saturday and Sunday - Working Sessions
Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning will be dedicated to work- sessions,
many of which will come from topics presented during the education session.
Time will be allocated for small group work on such topics as:
 * a Strategic Plan for the National Mapping Program
 *  the development of a set of action items for the implementation of the
objectives of the NSDIStrategic Plan
 * recommendations of agenda items for the FGDC's Spring Meeting.Agenda
 * crafting a reaction to the WIPO Treaty
 * providing input to the NAPA Study on Geographic Information Resources
