A map more than 50 or 70 (depending upon which political/administrative
system/rules you work under!) years old is generally out of copyright, so
what is the problem with a non-classified map slightly older than these
dates?  The only valid fee payable would be to the holding
institution/person who owns the original 1545 map in question, as a
reproduction fee (cover/dust-jacket illustrations are usually charged at a
higher rate); indeed, the holder of the original map is to whom the question
ought to be addressed.  Or are you using a recent facsimile/reproduction for
which the modern printer/publisher can claim a fee?

Does this provide instant relief?
