An additional comment,

Definitely consider your patron's desires. As an academic institution, I find that most of my researchers want digital. However, we also serve members of the public who want paper. I'm old fashioned and still like paper for my topo maps unless I'm using them as part of a GIS analysis. If you go heavily digital, consider investing in large format scanners/plotters and patron service models involving these pieces of equipment.
