I have found 2 articles in the SLA G&M Division Bulletin from the 1970s
that include historical information about the AMS depository program.

In Number 86, December 1971
Nicoletti, Frank T. U.S. Army Topographic Command college depository
program, p. 2-8

In Number 106, December 1976
Murphy, Mary. DMATC and the map and chart depository program, p. 13-20

Does anyone have a good source or know the history of the AMS depository
program. How many libraries were involved? How long did it last?

Just curious.
