The following has just been mounted on 'Map History':

'What can the International Map Collectors' Society do to deter map
thieves?'

http://www.maphistory.info/baskes.html

This message from the IMCoS President was originally published in the
Journal of the International Map Collectors' Society, 103 (Winter 2005),
pp.3-4. It has been reproduced here by kind permission of IMCoS and the
author.

Roger Baskes, responding to the Forbes Smiley revelations, highlights the
ways that map collectors worldwide can help to minimise the potential damage
caused by such despoliation of research libraries. He itemises ways of
reducing the
attractiveness of map theft to those contemplating it, for example when a
collector takes common-sense measures to avoid buying a stolen item. His
thoughtful commentary also stresses the symbiotic relationship between
collectors, dealers and institutions.
