Just a note to you all. We just received this text which basically
accompanies the Russian 1:200,000 set for Afghanistan. The book
translates
the unique text found on the back of each sheet in the set. A huge
amount
of work went into translating these sheet backs [each one is different]
and
if you have the Russian-language map set, this English translation is
an
invaluable tool. Sorry not to have the isbn handy, but the book is
available from East View, which staff did all the work. The book, while
pricey, is a must have for any library holding the set; and for any
library
supporting Afghan info services for a regional institute, etc.

The book is useful as a "gridded regional geography" [sheet-based!] even
if
you do not own the set. More detail than you ever wanted to know about
Afghanistan, unless you are in a tank or among US troops there.
Remarkable
info.

ps: nobody paid me to write this!! I am just very pleased with this
product, and do not want anyone to miss it.
So is Iraq next?
