Carlos,

I believe maps from the 19th century were all hand colored. If the
copies you have pre-dating 1850 are not colored, that's mostly just a
coincidence and perhaps reflects more about the publisher or the
original owner of the maps and a choice they made not to color them.

If I were your student, I would grab a classic history of map making
type book such as: Bagrow and Skelton's A. /History of Cartography/,
1964 and look for a discussion of map coloring. There's also that
Historical atlas of Washington by Scott and De Lorme from 1988. Maybe
they have an essay on Washington maps and color.

Sounds like a fun project. Best of luck!

Angie

I have a student that is doing a maps project where she will detail the
history of Washington State maps.

One thing she noticed is that pre-1850 maps had no color in them while
post-1850 maps had color. When did color become part of mapmaking? Did
it have anything to do with the engravers that made the maps? Was color
more expensive to make?
