POSITION VACANCY
 
Position:       Government Documents Librarian
                Open: June 1, 1998
                Application Deadline: June 5, 1998
 
Library:        duPont-Ball Library, Stetson University, DeLand, Florida
 
Description:    The Government Documents Librarian reports to the Associate
Director for Public Services and is responsible for effectively managing a
Federal Depository Library Program collection of more than 300,000 documents
(25% selective depository) and  a state documents collection of
approximately 9,000 documents.  Key duties include the provision of in-depth
documents reference service, including service for an extensive depository
CD-ROM collection; collection development; stack maintenance; and day-to-day
supervision of  the documents processing  performed by a  full-time
documents assistant (who reports to the Associate Director for Technical
Services) and student assistants.  The Document Librarian develops short-
and long-range planning for the Department, including budget, space, and
equipment needs.  Requires close coordination with Technical Services on
documents processing and cataloging.   Participates in Reference Department
activities, including reference desk shifts (one night per week and
occasional Saturdays required) and library instruction.  Professional
development and  other activities appropriate to a tenure-track faculty
position are expected.
 
Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited M.L.S. and coursework and/or
related experience in government information and reference services.  Basic
computer skills, including Internet and database searching.  The ability to
work with all levels of faculty, staff, and students.  Good written and oral
communication skills.  Preferred:  Second Master's Degree; practical
experience with government information and the Federal Depository Library
Program.  Advanced computer skills, including HTML, knowledge of database
management, spreadsheet, and GIS software programs.  Experience in or
knowledge of library instruction.
 
Appointment:    Assistant Professor, tenure-track faculty appointment.
Twelve-month contract, 20 days annual leave.  Salary to be determined based
on qualifications and experience.
 
The University: Stetson University, founded in 1883, has on the DeLand
campus a College of Arts & Sciences,  a School of Business Administration,
and a School of Music.  The College of Law campus is in St. Petersburg.
Graduate programs are offered in business, education, counseling, and
certain other fields. Enrollment on the DeLand campus is approximately
2,000.  Stetson is the first private university in Florida to have received
a charter for a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.  DeLand is located 36 miles north
of Orlando and 23 miles west of Daytona Beach.
 
The Library:    The duPont-Ball Library has a collection of approximately
320,000 volumes and subscribes to more than 1,300 journals.  In 1887,
Stetson became the first Congressionally designated federal depository in
Florida.  Branch libraries in Music and Chemistry are maintained.  Library
faculty include nine librarians and a director of instructional media
services.  The library is a member of SOLINET, has the SIRSI Unicorn
integrated system, has subscriptions to major Internet database services,
and has a CD-ROM server in addition to several standalone CD-ROM databases.
