A while back, a guy who wanted to learn how to read USGS maps sent a
note to the list.  At that time, I found a huge bunch of examples and
exercises at the USGS site, http://mapping.usgs.gov, aimed at various
levels of difficulty that probably wouldn't be too hard to adapt.  Also,
you might want to take a look at Phil Muehrcke's book.
