This workshop was announced at the Eureka Western Assocation of Map
Libraries meeting by LaVonne Jacobsen in April. I asked LaVonne if we
could distribute it more broadly via maps-l. The GIS Center at SFSU
agreed to allow this info.posted as long it is made clear (understandably)
that California State University people have priority for registration. Note
the "respond by" date of May 3. (I would think that's not firm if there
are still openings!) Also note there's no cost info for non-CSU
faculty. I assume that would be determined if one was interested.
Following is the text from their flyer. (For further
info, contact SFSU, not me!) Kathryn Womble

Geographic information systems (GISs) are valuable tools for managing and
accessing digital library information, especially where maps or earth
imagery are involved.

This workshop will cover the basics of GIS use in Libraries, including the
use of ArcView for mapping data from common library data sources, e.g.
Census data. The basic outline of the course is as follows:
1. Management of digital map libraries
2. Information sources & emerging technologies
3. ArcView techniques for library data access
   - map and image display
   - database access and display
   - data charting tools
   - boolean selection tools
   - map/table/chart linking
   - customized interfaces for student access
4. Building a digital spatial library with GIS -- example application

Make sure to sign up soon -- seats are limited.
