Subject: Does millaria germanica equal US mile?
Date: Wed, 2 Jul 2003 12:14:56 -0400
From: "Falato, Brian" <[log in to unmask]>

-------------------
I'm just starting on a project cataloging rare maps. One of the titles
I have is "Florida et regiones vicinae." The cartographer is Joannes de
Laet and map was made in 1630, according to "The Southeast in early
maps" by William P. Cumming (the info is not on the map itself). The
only scale on the map uses millaria germanica. Is this the same as US
miles? A record in OCLC put in by the State Library of Florida gives
the scale as ca. 1:1,457,280. This represents 1 inch = 23 miles, which
would be the correct scale if millaria Germanica equals US miles. But
Cumming says the scale is 1 inch = 106 miles, which would make it
1:6,716,160. The size of the map given by Cumming matches up with the
copy I have, as well as the dimensions given in the OCLC record done by
State Library of Florida (27 cm. height x 35 cm width). I thought if I
could find out what millaria germanica equals in US miles, then at least
I could determine the scale for the copy I have.
