I would add to what Jim Coombs says with this. Even during WWII the
region would not have been regarded by Germany as German territory per
se, but instead as occupied Yugoslavia. The region in question has been
part of Austria (before WWI), and later part of the Kingdom of Serbs,
Croats and Slovenes, which later was called Yugoslavia (as kingdom and
republic). And now is the independent state of Slovenia. Filing the
maps under their current situation, no matter what that was at the time
of map production, ensures that you find maps of the region when needed.

I would file it under Slovenia, because someone comes in asking for maps
of Slovenia, there it will be, and you won't have to remember that you
have it filed with Germany.

Dear Sir/Madam

I work at the University of the West Indies as Map Curator. I have a
question re filing maps. I have some European maps printed in the WWII
era. My question is - Do I file the map under the current country
location or the location at the time of printing? I have a map which at
the time of printing represented a location in Nazi occupied Germany. It
is currently now part of Slovenia. Do I file the map under Germany or
Slovenia?

Any advice or referral to resolve this issue would be appreciated.

Best wishes

Thera
