----
I juat wanted to add my personal view to David's comments.

Please, start a trade war....or at least help us do something
that could change some of the policies related to the accessing and
dissemination of Canadian governmental information.

As for the USGS materials and access...

Thank you!!! Thank you for having the foresight to create
policies/legislation that makes it fairly clear that taxpayers
have paid once for their information, so they shouldn't be asked to pay
again. (If you fight a war to get rid of the crown...I guess you don't
have to worry about Crown Copyright..)

Interestingly, I do think there are some sub-agreements to NAFTA which
can be used by the US gov to request the release of our data for the same
price you release yours to us. (AN agreement on environmental
cooperation?..see http://www.cec.org )

What does bother me is the fact that the US can carry on such innovative
and proactive activities such as the On-line digital atlas for Central
America after Hurricane Mitch.

http://cindi.usgs.gov/events/mitch/cent_amer.html

Only through open door policies related to the bits and bytes that make up
geospatial information can we ever hope to do similar things for more
places...and for cross border issues.

(As an aside David, I calculated how much it would cost me to buy
the digital topo data around for Nova Scotia @ 1:250,000 and only a few
sheets at 1:50,000 for Halifax......it's approximately $4500.00...
.oh... and that doesn't include the $700.00 for place names)

sorry for the rant...some of us up north have very sore foreheads..
(that comes from banging our heads against the wall)

cheers
james
