                        A REMINDER, AND SOME NEWS
                        -------------------------

     Closure and re-opening
     **********************

Our Students' Room closes at the end of next Saturday, 11 July. We
re-open in our new, enlarged premises on Wednesday, 12 August. The
Oriental Reading Room opens on the same day, making available, among
other material, the India Office maps in Andrew Cook's care.

Our new address is given below. Please note that, while the Curators'
personal phone extensions, emails addresses and our fax number remain
unaltered, the phone number for general enquiries will be:

             [0]171 412 7702

The move is already two weeks old, and continues until February 1999.
We would be grateful if, during our month-long closure, as few remote
enquiries as possible were routed to us. To give us a chance to
settle into a markedly different, automated environment it would be
further appreciated if general enquiries could be held back until
     September.

Photographic enquiries, however, can be sent. We will deal with these
as and when the material becomes available, although delays will be
     inevitable.

But, for those wishing to visit us, please come *whenever* you wish,
on or after August 12th. We will do our very best to make you welcome
and, once all the material is on a single site, provide as smooth a
service as possible. Arrangements are being finalised to permit
material which has traditionally been held in different collections to
be seen at a single desk. We hope to have this in place for printed
books on the opening day, but maps in the Department of Manuscripts
will be unavailable until the completion of their move at the
     beginning of 1999.

The British Library Map Catalogue on CD-ROM
     *******************************************

In parallel with the move, and the final hectic preparations for the
re-opening, we are completing work on the CD-ROM catalogue. This will
provide the main route to our cartographic collections in the new St
Pancras building. Those of you who saw an interim version of the disk
at the beginning of the year will find, when the final version is sent
to you, that there are significant improvements. The British Library
Map Library is very proud of the disk, achieved jointly with our
publisher Primary Source Media. There is no doubt that it will
revolutionise access to our collections even though it represents,
fundamentally, a combined conversion of our earlier printed map
catalogues and their merging with the post-1974 automated file. If
you would like further information about the CD please contact PSM
direct, 50 Milford Road, Reading, RG1 8LJ, UK.
