If Susan hasn't found an answer to her gores question yet, you might
want to try an OLD junior high school geography book.  The one I used in
7th grade (1954-55) had end pages with map gores and also several plates
with various world distribution phenomena on gores.  I didn't know it
then, but now it kinda smells like somebody didn't like Mercator!  ;-)
