I have had very good experiences using direct contact with USGS. Try

        USGS Map Distribution
        Box 25286
        Denver, Colorado 80225
        (303) 236-7476

     or
        USGS
        1400 Independence Road
        Rolla, MO 65401
        (573) 341-0851

They also list an 800 number that I have used, but with less joy.

It's been a long time since I ordered quad sheets directly from USGS. Can
anyone tell me what the current price is, and more importantly, how long
delivery usually takes.

I've gotten spoiled by ordering local sheets from Illinois State Geological
Survey (cheap and fast). Now I want to buy the entire Los Angeles area,
and I'm weighing the pros and cons of ordering them from MapLink (immediate
delivery, but $6/sheet).

Is there a California state agency that sells them near USGS cost? Is
there still a USGS Public Inquiry office in LA?

Dennis,

The price for the standard USGS 7.5 minute quads jumped to $4.50
during this past year. I'm not sure what the delay is from Denver these
days, but you might also contact the California ESIC Offices:

        CA Dept. of Conservation
Div. of Mines and Geology Lab
        801 K Street MS 14 34
        Sacramento, CA 95814-3532

        (916) 445-5716 (Sales)
        (916) 327-1853 (Fax)

        Contact: Sylvia Bender-Lamb

                -and/or-

        Davidson Library
        U.C. Santa Barbara
        Santa Barbara, CA 93106-9010

        (805) 893-2779 (Voice)
        (805) 893-8799 (Fax)

I hope this helps!

Eric
